Join the TW Community

Unlike many journals, Talking Writing is an independent nonprofit that doesn't rely on university funding to cover overhead. Subscriptions are free. TW got its start with the help of several major donors, and individual donations keep it publishing.

TW's main program is Talking Writing magazine, which serves as the educational and community-building base for its nonproft mission:

  • Digital Standards—TW is a strong advocate for ethical digital publishing standards. Talking Writing is a professionally edited magazine at a time when such oversight has weakened or no longer exists at many other digital journals and news sites.
  • Literary Community—TW connects English-speaking writers and readers from around the world, encouraging the kind of civilized debate that's sorely lacking in digital media.
  • Diversity—Talking Writing is a safe space for writers interested in social justice issues. Female journalists, writers of color, and LGBT authors are routinely harassed online. TW's advocacy of literary diversity serves a real need.
  • Mentorship—Talking Writing offers editorial internships to a new generation of publishing professionals, especially to those from nontraditional backgrounds.
  • First-Person Journalism—TW is a hub for first-person journalism: personal storytelling that engages with the larger world of facts and ideas.

Become a TW Sponsor

As sponsors of literary work and good journalism online, major donors play a big role in promoting TW's nonprofit mission and in launching new programs. Here, you'll find many enjoyable ways to sponsor activities and become involved with Talking Writing.

Sponsor a Print Edition

TW would like to publish its first print anthology in 2018. We've received many requests from authors and readers to do so, and a sponsored gift of $2,500 will help underwrite the basic production and printing costs. Sponsors will be credited by name in the print edition.

Sponsor an Issue

Talking Writing publishes several issues a year. A sponsored gift of $5,000 will cover TW's production and administrative costs for one issue and help stabilize our annual budget. See TW's Editorial Calendar for upcoming issue themes. Sponsors will be credited by name on the Table of Contents page for that issue.

Sponsor an Editing Internship

Mentoring aspiring editors helps ensure professionalism in digital media. TW has worked with interns from several Boston-area colleges, but we want to extend our outreach to minority applicants of all kinds who don't have access to elite publishing circles. Sponsors who give $5,000 or more will enable TW to pay that intern a modest stipend and be credited on TW's Donation page.

Boost the Impact of TW Prizes

TW's annual contests allow us to focus on unusual genres and topics, such as flash nonfiction or Writing and Faith. We'd like to offer prizes with bigger cash awards to the winners (most past winners have received $500). A sponsored gift of $1,000 or more would allow us to increase the cash award for one or more contests a year. Sponsors will be credited on the TW Contests page and can designate the genre or writing topic for that prize.

Sponsor a TW Podcast

After almost ten years of publishing, TW has a wealth of writing in its archives. We'd like to create podcasts of TW's best material, bringing new audiences to spoken-word versions of work by TW authors. A sponsored gift of $1,000 would cover the basic costs of producing the first TW podcast. All sponsors will be credited by name.

Please contact TW to earmark major donations for a specific program or sponsorship. Direct all questions to TW editor Martha Nichols.

Some critics have said I'm a natural writer. Well, that's like being a natural open-heart surgeon.

—Maya Angelou, from a 2002 interview

The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.
